There is a moment that happens often during on location sessions. A client looks around and thinks, “We can just take the photo right here, right?”
It seems simple enough, and I completely understand that mindset. But the truth is, a truly exceptional headshot that looks effortless, natural, and beautifully lit rarely happens by accident.
Today’s session was a great reminder of that. My client wanted outdoor headshots, and as we were walking the space, I could tell they were thinking I would just stand there with my camera, point and shoot, and we would be done. They were not being difficult at all, just unaware of what goes into making a professional image.
What most people do not realize is that I bring a lot more than just a camera. I bring a full setup because I want options and control. If you have ever wondered what goes into a professional session, you can see more examples of my approach to on location headshots in Charlotte here. Even when the final photograph looks simple, there is a process behind it.
In this particular session, the client thought I could stand out in the street since there were not many cars passing by. But for a proper headshot setup, that space simply would not work. Once I explained that and began setting up, they saw what it really takes to create the kind of result they had in mind. I even raised a twelve foot scrim to block the direct sunlight and achieve soft, even illumination. Once everything was ready, the client looked around and said, “I didn’t know you would have all of this equipment.”
And that is exactly the point. The photograph should not look like all of that equipment was there. It should look natural and effortless — but getting to that point takes planning, precision, and experience.
The setup took about twenty five minutes, and the client was in front of the camera for maybe three. That is the part most people never see. A great headshot is built on a foundation of preparation and technical skill, not luck. My goal is always to make you look your absolute best, no matter the conditions, and that means bringing everything necessary to make it happen.
That is the value of working with an experienced professional. You do not have to think about how the light looks, whether the space works, or how to handle the setup. That is what I am there for.
